Timid and introverted, Ted (Ben Stiller) is a young man filled with anger towards the world. With the help of a third-rate private detective, he embarks on a quest to find Mary (Cameron Diaz), the girl he fell in love with back in high school, after thirteen long years. However, the detective also falls for Mary, and soon both men realize that everyone is vying for her affection and trying to win her over. Healy, the detective, tries every trick in the book to keep Ted away from her. Yet, Ted is determined to win back the heart of his former love, no matter what.
