Edward Cole (JACK NICHOLSON) is a millionaire company owner, while Carter Chambers (MORGAN FREEMAN) is a working-class car mechanic. Their worlds are completely different, but they find themselves sharing a hospital room and discover that they have two common desires: to spend the remaining years of their lives doing everything they've always wanted to do before "checking out", and a need to make peace with themselves without even realizing it.

Together, they embark on a car trip of their lives, becoming friends along the way and learning to live life to the fullest with insight and humor.
